DESCRIPTION
» Circumcision of children (ages 1 month to 15 years)
- Circumcision is a surgical procedure that removes the foreskin, the fold of skin covering the tip of the penis. This is a long-standing practice performed for various reasons, including religious, cultural, health, or hygienic purposes. While circumcision can be performed on males between 1 month and 15 years of age, several factors need to be considered.
» Why do I have to be circumcised?
- There are several reasons for circumcision of a child's foreskin, including:
- Medical.
- Phimosis: This condition occurs when the foreskin cannot retract normally, making it difficult to clean. Smegma can accumulate, and can lead to infection.
- Paraphimosis: This is an emergency in which the retracted foreskin cannot be returned to its original position, causing severe swelling and pain.
- Balanitis/Balanoposthitis: Recurrent inflammation may be an indication for circumcision to reduce infection.
- Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs): In young children who still wear diapers, circumcision may reduce the risk of UTIs somewhat.
- Religious and Cultural: Some religions, such as Judaism and Islam, require circumcision.
- Hygiene: Circumcision is believed to make it easier to clean the genitals, reducing the buildup of bacteria and feces.
- Medical.
» The appropriate age for circumcision.
- Circumcision can be performed from infancy through adulthood, but the recommended age range varies.
- Newborns: This is the most common time to do this in some cultures, as babies are not yet very pain-free and recover quickly.
- Age range: 1 month – 15 years: During this age range, circumcision is usually considered when there are medical indications, such as problems with tight foreskin, inflammation, or repeated infections.
- Young children (1 month – a few years): Anesthesia may be required for surgery, which carries risks that need to be considered.
- Adult children (pre-school age - adolescence): Children may have a better understanding of the procedure and can cooperate in the care of wounds, but there may be anxiety or fear. Surgery at this age often uses local anesthetics and anesthesia, depending on the child's cooperation.
