» Shingles Vaccine.
- It is an effective way to reduce the risk of developing shingles and related complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is common in older people or those with weakened immune systems.
» Types of Shingles Vaccines There are two main types of shingles vaccines as follows:
1. Live attenuated vaccine (Zoster Vaccine Live – ZVL)
- Inject only 1 needle under the skin.
- Recommended for those aged 60 and above.
- It is approximately 51% effective in preventing shingles and reducing the risk of PHN by approximately 39%.
2. Recombinant Zoster Vaccine – RZV หรือ Shingrix
- Two intramuscular injections, 2-6 months apart for those aged 50 years and over, or 1-2 months apart for those with compromised immune systems.
- It is effective in preventing shingles up to 97.2% and reduces the risk of PHN by up to 91.3%.
- Suitable for people with weak immune systems as it does not contain live viruses.
» Who should get vaccinated?
- Adults aged 50 years and over.
- People aged 18 years and over who have a weakened immune system, such as those receiving chemotherapy or taking immunosuppressive drugs.
- People who have had shingles before, as there is still a risk of recurrence.
» Possible side effects.
- Pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site.
- Common symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, or muscle aches.
- These symptoms are usually temporary and go away on their own within a few days.
