DESCRIPTION
» What is cervical cancer?
- It is caused by abnormal growth of cells in the cervix and become cancerous. It is usually caused by infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is a sexually transmitted virus.
» How to screen for cervical cancer.
- Pap smear.
- Check for abnormal cells that may become cancerous.
- It is recommended to be screened every 3 years for women aged 21–65 years.
- HPV DNA testing.
- Test for high-risk HPV strains that cause cancer.
- Recommended in conjunction with Pap smear or alone, especially for women aged 30 years and above.
- VIA (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid) testing.
- Apply diluted vinegar to the cervix and examine it with the naked eye.
- It is a simple, inexpensive screening method, suitable for remote areas.
» Who should be tested and when?
- Women who have had sexual intercourse should begin screening at age 21.
- Ges 21–29: Pap smear every 3 years.
- Age 30–65 years: Pap smear + HPV DNA every 5 years (or Pap smear only every 3 years).
- Age >65 years: If the retrospective test results are normal, the test may be stopped.
» Importance of inspection.
- Detect abnormal cells before they become cancerous.
- It greatly reduces the mortality rate from cervical cancer.
- If detected early, cervical cancer can be effectively treated.
» Preparation before examination.
- Abstain from sexual intercourse for 24-48 hours before the examination.
- Avoid using vaginal suppositories, creams, or internal washing.
- Not during menstruation.
» Cervical cancer prevention.
- Get vaccinated against HPV before becoming sexually active (can be vaccinated up to age 45)
- Use a condom every time you have sex.
- Regular screening.
- Don't smoke.
