DESCRIPTION
» Hysterosalpingography – HSG.
- Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a type of radiological test used to evaluate abnormalities of the uterus and fallopian tubes. It is an important basic test for women experiencing infertility to determine the cause of the problem.
» What does an HSG test examine?
- Uterus: Helps to visualize the shape, size, and abnormalities of the uterine cavity, such as submucosal fibroids, polyps, or uterine septum, which may interfere with embryo implantation.
- Fallopian tubes: This helps assess whether both fallopian tubes are open and if there is a blockage, the location of the blockage can be identified. It can also look for swelling of the fallopian tubes (hydrosalpinx), which can cause infertility or increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy.
» HSG test procedure.
- Preparation: The test should be done during the first half of the menstrual cycle (around day 7-10 of the cycle) after the period has ended to ensure that you are not pregnant and that the uterus is in the right condition. You should inform your doctor if you have a history of drug allergies, seafood allergies, or any chronic diseases.
- During the inspection.
- The patient will lie on their back on the examination table as if undergoing a pelvic exam.
- The doctor will insert a speculum to provide a clear view of the cervix.
- The cervix is cleaned and a small catheter or thin tube is inserted into the cervix.
- A contrast dye is injected into the uterus and fallopian tubes. The contrast dye flows through the fallopian tubes and out into the abdominal cavity.
- During this time, periodic X-rays will be taken to view the distribution of the contrast material and to obtain images of the structure of the uterus and fallopian tubes.
- Patients may feel a dull, menstrual-like pain during the injection of the contrast medium. Some patients may experience slight discomfort.
- After the examination: Patients can return home immediately. There may be some light vaginal bleeding or a discharge mixed with contrast material. Avoid sexual intercourse, vaginal douching, or the use of tampons temporarily as advised by your doctor.
» Preparation before the examination.
- Consult a doctor: Your doctor will advise you on preparation and precautions.
- Fasting: It is generally not necessary to fast, but in some cases your doctor may recommend that you do so.
- Report health information: Inform the doctor of any history of drug allergies, chronic diseases, or medications you are currently taking.
- Plan your trip: Have someone pick you up and drop you off if you feel unwell after the test.
