DESCRIPTION

» CT Calcium Score (or Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring-CAC Score) for detecting plaque in coronary arteries

  • It's a diagnostic radiology method that uses a non-contrast CT scan to measure the amount of calcium accumulated in the walls of the coronary arteries, which are the blood vessels that directly supply the heart muscle

» Purpose of CT Calcium Score.

  • To assess the risk of coronary artery disease due to plaque.
  • The detection of calcified plaque indicates previous inflammation and healing within the arterial walls.
  • It helps assess cardiac risk in asymptomatic individuals.

» Advantages of the Test.

  • No contrast injection, no pain.
  • Quick, taking approximately 5-10 minutes.
  • Safe and low-radiation.
  • Ideal for screening individuals with moderate risk factors, such as those aged 40 and above, smokers, people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease.

» CAC Score Interpretation

ค่า Score ความหมาย ความเสี่ยงต่อโรคหัวใจ
› 0 › No calcified plaque found. › Very low risk.
› 1-99 › Minimal calcified plaque. › Low-to-moderate risk.
› 100-399 › Moderate calcified plaque. › Moderate-to-high risk.
› ≥ 400 › Extensive calcified plaque. › Very high risk.

» Remarks.

  • The higher the score, the greater the future risk of acute myocardial infarction (Heart Attack).

» Who should consider a CT Calcium Score?

  • Men > 40 years old or women > 50 years old.
  • Individuals with a moderate risk of heart disease who are unsure whether they need preventive medication.
  • Family history of early-onset heart disease.
  • Asymptomatic but seeking risk assessment.

» Who should not undergo the test?

  • Individuals who already have symptoms of heart disease (should undergo other tests such as CT Coronary Angiogram or Cardiac Catheterization).
  • Pregnant women (due to radiation exposure).
  • Individuals who have already been tested and have a high CAC Score (frequent re-testing is not necessary).
