DESCRIPTION
» Problems with urine leakage?
- It is a common occurrence and affects the quality of life of many women, especially after childbirth or during menopause. Urinary incontinence can occur when coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or even in everyday life.
» The main causes of urinary incontinence.
- Childbirth: Multiple natural births, especially, can cause weakness or damage to the muscles and nerves in the pelvic area.
- Age: As we age, our body's muscles, including our pelvic floor muscles, naturally become weaker.
- Menopause: Estrogen changes during menopause cause the tissues in the urinary tract and vagina to become thinner and weaker.
- Overweight/Obesity: Being overweight increases pressure on your bladder and pelvic floor muscles.
- Chronic coughing, such as in people with asthma or heavy smokers. Severe, persistent coughing increases pressure in the abdomen and bladder.
- Frequent heavy lifting: Activities that increase pressure in the abdominal cavity can weaken the pelvic floor muscles.
- Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, neurological diseases, or surgery in the pelvic area.
» Types of urine leakage.
- Stress Incontinence: This is the most common type and occurs when there is a sudden increase in intra-abdominal pressure, such as when coughing, sneezing, laughing, running, or lifting something heavy, causing a small amount of urine to leak out.
- Urge Incontinence / Overactive Bladder: Feeling a strong and sudden urge to urinate, unable to hold it in time and a large amount of urine leaks out. Often caused by involuntary bladder contractions.
- Mixed Incontinence: Symptoms of both of the above types occur together.
- Overflow Incontinence: Occurs when the bladder is unable to completely empty, leaving too much urine behind and gradually leaking out.
» How to cope and treat.
- Behavioral and lifestyle modification.
- Bladder Training: Practice going to the bathroom for a set time, not holding urine for too long, and try to gradually extend the time spent in the bathroom.
- Limit certain beverages: Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated beverages, which can irritate the bladder.
- Weight control: Lose weight if you are overweight or obese.
- Manage constipation: Straining to pass stool can increase pressure on your pelvic floor muscles.
- Manage constipation: Straining to pass stool can increase pressure on your pelvic floor muscles.
- Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercises (Kegel Exercises)
- Regular pelvic floor muscle exercises are the most effective way to strengthen the muscles that control urination.
- How to do it: Squeeze the muscles around the vagina and anus as if trying to hold urine or feces. Hold for 3-5 seconds, then release. Repeat 10-15 times per set and do 3 sets per day.
- Consistency: Should be done regularly every day to see clear results.
- Using assistive devices: Kegel balls or electric pelvic floor muscle trainers can help.
