DESCRIPTION

» Corneal Light Treatment.

  • Cross-linking (Corneal Collagen Cross-linking: CXL) is a treatment for keratoconus, a disease that causes the cornea to weaken and stretch out of shape, using UV-A light in combination with vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) to strengthen the collagen structure in the cornea.

» Treatment steps.

  • Riboflavin is instilled into the cornea to allow it to penetrate into the corneal tissue.
  • Low-intensity UV-A light is exposed to the cornea for ~30 minutes.
  • Light therapy stimulates the bonds between collagen fibers in the cornea, making the cornea stronger.

» Main purpose.

  • Stop or slow down the progression of corneal bulging.
  • It does not directly correct vision (but in some cases, it may help improve vision slightly after treatment).

» Risks or side effects.

  • Dry or irritated eyes after surgery.
  • Vision may be temporarily blurred for 1-2 weeks.
  • There is some chance of infection or corneal ulceration, but it is rare.
