DESCRIPTION
» Tongue-tie surgery.
- It is the cutting or resection of the frenum under the tongue that is too tight or too short, a condition called “tongue-tie” (or Ankyloglossia).
» Characteristics of tongue-tie.
- The frenulum under the tongue is short, thick, or too tightly attached.
- Restricted tongue movement, such as not being able to stick the tongue out beyond the lips or lift the tip of the tongue.
- It can be present from birth and may be minor or severely disruptive to daily life.
» Symptoms that may be encountered.
› In infants or young children, as follows:
- Poor latch during breastfeeding (not latching well, discontinuous sucking)
- Slow weight gain.
- Mothers may experience sore nipples when their babies suckle.
- Frequent choking or swallowing of air.
› In older children or adults, as follows:
- Speech imprecision in some sounds (e.g. /l/, /r/)
- The tongue cannot lick the lips.
- The tongue cannot touch the roof of the mouth.
- Swallowing or eating problems.
» Treatment: Surgical removal of the lingual frenum
- Frenotomy.
- Sutureless scar removal.
- Often used in infants or young children.
- Use scissors or a laser to cut off a small amount of scar tissue.
- It takes a very short time, no more than 1-2 minutes.
- Anesthesia may not be necessary in infants (because the nerves in this area are not yet fully developed).
- Frenuloplasty.
- More complex surgery is used when the scar tissue is thick or when new scar tissue has formed after previous surgery.
- Performed in older children or adults.
- Stitching is also used and anesthesia may be required.
» Postoperative care.
- The child may experience minor pain for 1-2 days.
- There may be some slight bleeding.
- Let the child suckle or drink milk as usual immediately after the procedure.
- In some cases, physical therapy may be recommended after surgery to prevent scar tissue from recurring.
» When should surgery be performed?
- If you have problems with sucking, speaking or swallowing.
- Get advice from a specialist, such as a pediatrician, pediatric dentist, speech therapist, or oral surgeon.
