» What is a hernia?

• It is a condition in which internal organs, such as intestines or abdominal fat, push out through a weak point in the muscle wall, such as the groin or navel, causing a lump to appear.

Common types of hernias include:

• Inguinal Hernia – Most common, especially in men.
• Umbilical Hernia – Common in infants and adults who are obese or have high abdominal pressure.
• Incisional Hernia – Occurs at the site of the previous surgical wound.
• Hiatal Hernia – The upper part of the intestines moves up into the chest cavity (treatment is different than other types).

1. Open Hernia Repair.
   • The surgeon makes an incision at the hernia site.
   • The intestines are pushed back in and the abdominal wall is sutured closed.
   • A mesh sheet is often used to strengthen it.
   • Suitable for large or complicated hernias.
2. Laparoscopic Hernia Repair.
   • Use a small camera and tools through a small hole.
   • Less pain, small wound, quick recovery.
   • It takes a team of skilled surgeons.
   • The cost of treatment is higher than open surgery.

» Preparation before surgery.

• Do not eat or drink for at least 6-8 hours before surgery.
• Physical examination, blood tests and X-rays as appropriate.
• Inform your doctor if you have any chronic diseases or are allergic to any medications.

» Postoperative care.

• Rest and avoid heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks.
• Take medication as prescribed by your doctor.
• Keep the wound clean and dry.
• Do light exercise after recovery to prevent recurrence.
