DESCRIPTION

» Amniocentesis.

  • It is a prenatal diagnostic test that doctors use to assess the health and genetics of the fetus, especially to look for genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome or other genetic diseases.

» What is amniocentesis?

  • It involves using a small needle to puncture the mother's abdominal skin into the uterus to draw out a small amount of amniotic fluid (the fluid that surrounds the fetus) to be sent for analysis in a laboratory.

» The right time to perform amniocentesis.

  • It is generally done during the 15th-20th week of pregnancy.
  • If it is urgent, it can be done sooner, but it will involve a higher risk.

» Reasons why doctors recommend amniocentesis.

  • Mother is over 35 years old.
  • Have a history of infants with abnormalities.
  • Screening results (such as blood tests or ultrasound) indicate a high risk.
  • Have a family history of genetic diseases.
  • Want to know the gender of the baby with accuracy (if necessary)

» Risks of amniocentesis.

  • Miscarriage (risk approximately 0.1-0.3%)
  • Risk of infection.
